A bust of a World Grand Champion Saddlebred mare sits on the modeling stand. It’s good to be back to work. Vancouver and Washington State were gorgeous and a wonderful break in the work schedule. But work beckons.
I allowed myself some time on a painting yesterday morning. Recently someone asked me how you determine when to stop on a piece. It finally dawned on me that most of those perfectly timed pieces are the result of many attempts before the final result. I knew this but would be mesmerized by the image in front of me. There’s probably five paintings of the same piece in the studio this morning; one an ink drawing, the next a pencil and ink and gouache with a touch of pastel, then an acrylic and pencil drawing and finally an oil sketch. It is a movable feast these paintings.
